The sky had been grey since morning, but Aarav didn’t expect the rain to pour so suddenly. He stood outside a small café, watching people rush past him with umbrellas and hurried steps. He had forgotten his own umbrella at home—a mistake he now regretted deeply.

Aarav wasn’t just waiting for the rain to stop. He was waiting for something else too—though he couldn’t quite name it.

“Excuse me… would you like to share?”

He turned to see a girl standing beside him, holding out her umbrella slightly in his direction. Her eyes were warm, and her smile carried a quiet kindness.

For a moment, Aarav hesitated. He wasn’t someone who easily spoke to strangers. But something about her presence felt… safe.

“Thank you,” he said softly, stepping closer under the umbrella.

They began walking together, slowly, matching each other’s pace as if they had done this before.

“I’m Meera,” she said after a few seconds.

“Aarav.”

The rain continued to fall, but neither of them seemed to mind anymore.

They reached a crossing where their paths should have separated. Aarav pointed toward the right. “I go this way.”

Meera nodded. “I go left.”

There was a brief pause—one of those moments where words feel too small for what you’re feeling.

“It was nice meeting you,” Aarav said.

“You too.”

And just like that, they went their separate ways.

But something had changed.

Days passed, but Aarav couldn’t forget her. It wasn’t just her smile or her voice—it was the way everything had felt effortless in those few minutes.

He found himself returning to the same café every evening, hoping to see her again.

And then, one day—he did.

She was sitting by the window, reading a book.

Aarav’s heart raced as he walked inside.

“Meera?”

She looked up, surprised—and then smiled. “Aarav.”

It felt like no time had passed at all.

“Do you always sit here?” he asked.

“Only when it rains,” she replied playfully.

They laughed, and just like that, their conversations began.

Over the next few weeks, the café became their place.

They talked about everything—dreams, fears, childhood memories, and the little things that made them who they were.

Aarav learned that Meera loved poetry and long walks. Meera discovered that Aarav had a passion for photography and a habit of overthinking everything.

“You think too much,” she teased one day.

“And you don’t think enough,” he replied.

“Maybe that’s why we met.”

But not all stories move smoothly.

One evening, Meera seemed distant.

“What’s wrong?” Aarav asked.

She hesitated before answering. “I’m leaving.”

The words hit him harder than he expected. “Leaving? Where?”

“My family is moving to another city. I don’t have a choice.”

Silence filled the space between them.

“When?” he finally asked.

“Tomorrow.”

That night, Aarav couldn’t sleep.

He realized something he had been avoiding for weeks—he had fallen in love with her.

But he had never said it.

And now, it might be too late.

The next morning, the sky was clear.

No rain.

Aarav rushed to the café anyway, hoping—just hoping—that he might see her one last time.

But she wasn’t there.

He sat down, staring at the empty chair across from him.

For the first time, the café felt incomplete.

Days turned into months.

Life moved on, as it always does.

Aarav focused on his work, his photography, and the routine he had built for himself.

But every time it rained, he found himself standing outside, remembering the day everything had started.

A year later, on a rainy afternoon, Aarav stood in the same place again.

And then—

“Excuse me… would you like to share?”

His heart stopped.

He turned around.

It was her.

Meera.

Standing there with the same umbrella, the same smile.

“Meera?” he whispered.

“I told you,” she said softly, “I only come here when it rains.”

He couldn’t believe it. “You’re back?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I wanted to see if you would still be here.”

Aarav laughed, shaking his head. “I never really left.”

________________________________________

They walked together again, just like the first time.

But this time, there was no hesitation.

No uncertainty.

Only understanding.

“I missed you,” Aarav said.

“I know,” Meera replied.

“How?”

“Because I missed you too.”

________________________________________

They stopped at the same crossing.

But this time, neither of them moved.

“I don’t want to lose you again,” Aarav said.

“You won’t,” Meera replied.

“Because this time,” she added, taking his hand, “we’re choosing each other.”

The rain continued to fall around them, but it no longer felt like something to escape.

It felt like something to remember.

Because sometimes, love doesn’t arrive with grand gestures or perfect timing.

Sometimes, it begins with a simple moment—

A shared umbrella.

A quiet conversation.

A chance meeting that turns into something unforgettable.

And sometimes, if you’re lucky—

The rain brings you back to where your heart truly belongs.
